Children’s Diversity Bibliography: Autism
2.3 Respect for diversity
Candidates demonstrate the ability to develop a collection of reading and information materials in print and digital formats that support the diverse developmental, cultural, social, and linguistic needs of P-12 students and their communities. Description
This annotated bibliography focuses on books about and for elementary-aged autistic students. There are a variety of books including picture books, chapter books, and nonfiction books. I chose this area of focus because I worked with several autistic students in my elementary school. Analysis The books included in this bibliography are accessible to students of all ages. There are books for students who want to learn more about autism, as well as fictional books with autistic characters. Some of the books are meant for older elementary readers, but the picture books can be used even with kindergarten students. This is a very specific bibliography, focusing on only one disability, but over time I want to add other disabilities as well. In addition, I would like to make it even more accessible to students by including these books on a tab of our online public access catalog. Reflection I want the books in the media center to reflect the diversity of our students. As a result, I try to focus on reading a wide range of books. In my collection development, I look at the diversity needs based on the demographics of the school community. Going forward, I want to continue to create annotated bibliographies for each new group of students I work with. That way over time, I will truly have a large toolkit of books to support the diverse needs of my school. |
