Action Research Presentation
3.4 Research and knowledge creation
Candidates use evidence-based, action research to collect data. Candidates interpret and use data to create and share new knowledge to improve practice in school libraries. Description
This is a digital presentation of my action research project on library reorganization. Background research suggested that organizing a library collection by genre can increase circulation by making resources easier to access. The presentation was designed to be shared with the administration at my elementary school, to persuade them to allow me to reorganize the media center. Analysis There is a lot of data available to support reorganizing the library by genre, also known as genrefication. I was able to find many research articles written about the benefits of genrefying a library, and several articles that were neutral and shared both pros and cons of genrefying. The main weakness is that I have not had the opportunity to conduct my research project. Before reading the research, I was against genrefication. I was surprised to find that after reading several articles I was convinced genrefying could be a good idea for students. I shared my presentation with the media specialist at the middle school where I am interning, because she is considering reorganizing her media center by genre as well. Reflection This project taught me about the benefits of collecting data to improve media center processes. After going through the action research process, it was easier for me to help other media specialists look at circulation data for their media centers. I love analyzing data so that part of a media specialist’s job has always been enjoyable for me. In the future, I would like to focus on improving a new aspect of the media center each year. Now that I understand the action research process, I will be ready to start collecting data to support my own improvement processes. |
