School Library Program Assessment
4.3 Leadership
Utilizing evidence-based practice and information from education and library research, candidates communicate ways in which the library program can enhance school improvement efforts. Description
Using the L4L School Librarian Evaluation rubric, I interviewed a middle school librarian and evaluated the media program. I went through each of the four aspects of learning: developing visions, teaching, the learning environment, and leadership, and I used the rubric to assess the program and write comments about it. I analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of the program and came up with three goals and objectives for improvements. Analysis It can be challenging for a media specialist to figure out if the library program is meeting the needs of the school. This evaluation has a very extensive rubric, so I was glad I was able to work through the rubric with the librarian I was interviewing. I discovered that it was very time consuming, and it would take longer than the hour I had scheduled. It was helpful to go through each component of the four aspects and see all the different areas that a librarian is supposed to support. It was also useful to talk with the librarian and get feedback on where she spends most of her time. I was surprised to see that there was an area for budget and staffing on the evaluation which is outside of the librarian’s control. Looking ahead, I would like to use this evaluation rubric on my own library at some point to get an idea of what areas may need improvement. Reflection The library program should support classroom teachers and the school mission. This evaluation rubric helps librarians assess whether or not their library program is supporting those efforts. For example, this particular media specialist was well versed in leadership, providing professional development, and technology, but she usually worked alone. She had yet to create an advisory committee and involve students in the library program. I love the idea that the library can always be improved and made better. As the school’s mission changes, the library program needs to change as well. Evaluating the library program is part of the continuous cycle of improvement. Now that I am familiar with this rubric, I can use it going forward to ensure that my own library is supporting teachers and aligned with the goals of the school. |
