Materials Order
5.1 Collections
Candidates evaluate and select print, non-print, and digital resources using professional selection tools and evaluation criteria to develop and manage a quality collection designed to meet the diverse curricular, personal, and professional needs of students, teachers, and administrators. Description
This is a materials order of forty items selected for an elementary media center including picture books, fiction, nonfiction, and non-book items like audiobooks and apps. All of the titles were selected using highly recommended award lists or professional selection sources. I also provided my personal rationale for selecting each item. Analysis As a new media specialist, the task of ordering new books and materials for the library can be daunting. I am happy that I had more time to devote to this order than might be possible in the future. I was able to read each review and see how different sources may differ in relation to the same book. Apps are not often reviewed in the selection magazines, so the ALA’s Best Apps list is especially useful for selecting quality apps. An unexpected benefit of this project was that I used my materials order a few months later when I became a new media specialist. I also shared it with several other media specialists in the county. Although I enjoyed the process of writing my rationale for selecting every item, in reality I will not have the time to do that for every item in my future orders. Reflection I enjoyed going through this process and learning about different review sources and how to select materials. In addition, I focused on making sure my selections represented a diverse group of students and interests. Having a diverse collection has always been important to me, and this materials order reflects that goal. Looking ahead, I want to continue to advocate for diversity in my collection, and make sure that my future orders reflect the needs of my school community. |
