Database Screencasts
3.3 Information technology
Candidates demonstrate their ability to design and adapt relevant learning experiences that engage students in authentic learning through the use of digital tools and resources. Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research, learning, creating, and communicating in a digital society. |
Description
I created screencasts for two online resources: one database, Discovery Education, and one eBook collection, TrueFlix. I created these videos to show elementary students how to use these tools. We went over the tools during library lessons, but the videos are helpful for students to review how to use the sites or for students who are absent during the lesson. The script for each video is included in the notes of the screencasts. Analysis These short screencasts highlight all the essential elements of each resource. They are long enough to include all the information students would need to know, but not too long that students will get bored and stop paying attention. The weakness is that not everything can be covered in three minutes, and the videos move at a faster pace than an in-class demonstration. I learned a lot while making these videos, because I had to plan out each step I was going to demonstrate. The best way to learn how to use a resource is to teach it, so I knew more about both of these tools after demonstrating them. One important thing I learned is that some tools, like Discovery Education, have different views for students and teachers so it is important to use a student login when making the screencast. Reflection Screencasts take time to put together, but the finished product is worth the effort. I love all of the screencasts I have created and they are invaluable resources to have. Screencasts can also be a valuable tool in providing more personalized instruction for students. A video allows students to go at their own pace. They can play the video, pause it, and try out the tool as they are watching the video. A class can move along at different rates, and it makes it easy for absent students to catch up. Going forward I want to create screencasts for more media center resources since our county has a large collection of databases. I would also like to have students try screencasting so they can share their knowledge of these resources. |
