Library Facilities Redesign
5.3 Personnel, Funding, and Facilities
Candidates apply best practices related to planning, budgeting, and evaluating human, information, and physical resources. Candidates organize library facilities to enhance the use of information resources and services and to ensure equitable access to all resources for all users. Description
This project had two parts: evaluating the layout and function of a media center and redesigning it to meet the needs of the school. I walked around an elementary media center and looked for different areas to meet the MSDE’s five standards for library facilities. After evaluating the space, I created an updated floor plan to show how I would redesign the media center. Analysis I love visiting other media centers because I always get new ideas for my own media center. Looking at other spaces helps me learn about the different areas that we are supposed to have in a media center. After evaluating one media center, I am better prepared to notice changes that are needed when I visit other media centers. During my practicum, I noticed right away that there was no quiet reading area in the middle school library. The main drawback of the process was creating the actual floor plan which was time consuming. However, it was a powerful visual aid and very useful in submitting a facilities request to rearrange the media center space. Reflection Part of the evaluation process was to look at the space and signage to see if it was truly providing equitable access. I noticed there were no signs in Spanish or Braille, despite having students who would benefit from those accommodations. Equity issues like that are not always considered but easy to fix. After rereading this product, I realized that my own new media center needs some changes to provide equitable access. I will make some of these changes soon. In the future, I need to remember that I should evaluate the library space any time I change positions and have a new media center. |
